Facebook are constantly tweaking their algorithms and are changing how high items appear in the main newsfeed, and they’ve just announced that they’ll be punishing content which is shared ‘implicitly’ behind the scenes.

What FB mean by ‘implicitly’ is that when a user performs an action in a third party app, sometimes that content automatically gets shared on the users FB newsfeed without the user being aware, and they’ve found that those types of posts get less engagement and more often than not get flagged as spam by the user.

Here’s what they had to say about it in their blog post.

In general, we’ve found that people engage more with stories that are shared explicitly rather than implicitly, and often feel surprised or confused by stories that are shared implicitly or automatically. Over the past year, the number of implicitly shared stories in News Feed has naturally declined. This decline is correlated with how often people mark app posts as spam, which dropped by 75% over the same period. In the coming months, we will continue to prioritize explicitly shared stories from apps in News Feed and Ticker over implicitly shared stories.

So if your apps are sharing stories on people’s newsfeeds in this way, then you’ll start to see your views and engagement on those stories start to drastically decline as they’re going to be downgraded by FB’s algorithms to display less frequently.

Take a read of the full blog post here as they offer some good advice on how to change the way you share and move over to ‘explicit’ sharing, using Instagram and integrating the message dialog methods as examples.
